Audio Assault & Fastcars Nissan Largo Project

Due to Audio Assault being one of the biggest, best and cheapest car audio retailers in the UK, we get alot of interest from the modified car mags (Fast Car and Max Power etc etc). Back in October of 2007 Fastcar approched us wanting us to build and promote car audio through their mag and at shows to help bring awareness back to Car Audio. Here, the story starts!...

The Largo was a huge, sloppy, ugly little thing with a horrid interrior and a crappy blue paint job (being brutally honest). Transforming it into the UKs loudest and sexiest show car his was going to be a HUGE task.

We started off with some super sexy - deep dish - rims and adjusted the camber so they stuck out like fook. Although very cool, this was just no where near enough to transform this dull Jap motor into something that we could even pretend had an ounce of respect.

We popped over to our good friends (You know who you are ;-)) to build a complete custom body kit. This took only 4 weeks to build and fit and immediately set the car apart externally.

We then added a nice large HD Screen for the rear and slapped in an Xbox 360, all mounted on a custom chromed frame.

The original plan was to have 4 subs and some entertainment, hence the Xbox 360. This soon changed after Audio Assault met with the Fastcar guys to discuss the potential of the project and any ideas we had (plus it was a great excuse to catch up and have a few beers )

It soon became obvious that what we were going to attempt would be truly crazy! Ideas started flying around and everybodys heads were going into overdrive. Before long it was agreed that the 360 and the HD TV had to go (This wasn't great news as we had just spent over £2k ordering the barstewards and fitting them!).

We decided to completely disregard any plan, go with gut instinct and be as crazy as possible. Fastcar put all their trust in AudioAssault to deliver, and this was certainly something we were determined to do.

We needed a product brand to fill the car with. Our hearts were going with RE Audio but this wouldnt work (Although it would have been just plain mental!) due to the price of the kit (could have cost in excess of £250,000!) and we wanted to make the project seem acheivable to car audio enthusiasts. Most people dont have a disposable income anywhere near the prices of the High-End brands so we decided to go for a budget brand - this in itself makes the task harder as the products, in theory, wouldnt perform anywhere near as well.

Our choices were narrowed down to Fusion, Vibe, Legacy and Mutant. We took some items from our stock to do some testing and used all our experience to determine which brand would be the best.

Vibe were just too cheesy in our opinion and the Subs didnt perform anywhere near as well as the other brands subs. The wattage ratings just seemed WAY too high.

Fusion seemed a good choice but we decided against it for one reason only, we didnt want it to be green! (At the time, this was pretty much the only Fusion option)

Legacy seemed another reasonable choice, the subs performed very well, however, Mutant clinched it with their designs and the performance. The new XXX range had black carbon fiber cones which just looked stunning!

After choosing a brand, we then had to decide just HOW crazy we wanted it to be and our ideas were only stopped by physical and electrical impossibilities.

We got together with Fastcar again (for yet another beer ) and came up with the idea to fit as many subs inside as we could. After extensive calculations on enclosure designs, weight, making sure the subs had the correct enclusure size, heating & cooling etc etc - we finally arrived with the grand total sum of subwoofers that could be fitted inside... FOURTY! thats 40! The total number of subs here need a minimum of 24,000 watts!

As we settled for brand and amount, we then needed a new colour, the blue was just plain crap! We sent the motor off to be tested with different colours and in the end opted for the Matted ST Orange that you are now all familiar with.

Now onto the enclosure building and wiring the car. We put a total of over 120kg of 0 Gauge wires! this took in excess of 4 whole days to do due to the physical amount of amps we need to run the kit, plus we had to rip the entire interior out including its 7 seats and the TV and Xbox we had previously fitted. We then calculated the appropriate power sources, we settled for 5 yeallow-top Optima 220amp batterie - A couple of which are hidden and ALL of which have custom fabricated mounts.

The eonclosure was coming on nicely, giving each subwoofer its recommended 1 cu-ft of size. Now all the wiring was done, we just had to build the enclosure inside the Largo. We used 1" thick MDF as we knew that this really needed to be strong in order to handle what we wanted it to.

We finished the enclosure and added the subs, carpeted it and covered the sides in our lovely ST Orange ostrich leather imported from Australia. Wired the subs and screwed them into place. Hey presto...

We then needed to get some speakers for the actual music! Forget the bass for a few minutes :D

We fitted a few infront of the sub encolsure/tunnel and slapped some in the custom fiberglass centre console we made to fit above the engine.

We also set out making a couple of custom door cards using the very same ST Orange ostrich leather.

All in all, 28 speakers, 14 pairs. All running off nice large amps .

Next on the list was amplification. We wanted something just as flashy as the bass tunnel we had created so we went for a black perspex rear amplifier presentation. Again, finished in the Ostrich leather. We added 18 amps (only 10 can be seen) along with 4, 10 farad power caps to add some extra punch. We then added a few extra digital displays so we could see how our belovied batteries were getting on with all the wattage.
