Beginners Guide To Amp Installation

So ... you have your sub, amp and wiring kit ... heres a quick lo-down on what goes where.

The subwoofer goes in the boot (hopefully) nicely screwed into its MDF box ... If you bought the subwoofer and the box seperately you might need to connect the Terminal on the subwoofer box the the sub itself ... ALWAYS remember to connect RED to + and BLACK to -

Next, for easyness, screw the amp onto the subwoofer box somewhere, this is ideal because it keeps it secure and out the way.

The long RED cable goes to the batter, this supplies power to the amp and should have a little black box somewhere near one end, this end attaches to the + terminal on the battery and the other end connects to the + on your amp (sometimes call Battery or Power (Often abbreviated to BAT or PWR))

The best way to do this is to remove the fuse inside the little black box and keep it safe, then connect the battery end up and find somewhere in the Bulkhead to poke the wire through into the cabin ... it is very bad practice to drill a hole in the bulkhead to poke it through so explore EVERY other option first

Next is the shorter BLACK cable, this connects to the - terminal on your amp, often labelled GND for Ground, This wire then connects to the bodywork of your car, this provides a good grounding for the amp. Usually the best place for this is in the back of the rear light fitting, it may be necessary to sand a small patch around the earthing point until metal is exposed, this provides the best contact between the cable and the body.

Next is the very thin blue cable often called the REMOTE cable. This cable connects to the RMT or Remote connection on your amp and also must be connected the other end to your head unit (cd player) It may be necessary to refer to your cd player manual find find which cable this is (usually blue and left hanging out of the bunch of wires which feeds into the back of your cd player. 99% of standard stereos will NOT have this feature and there an aftermarket stereo is essential .... check the Audio Assault website for the best deals on new headunits.

The purpose of the blue remote cable is to link the headunit to the amp for remote turn on ... basically when your cd player is urned on it sends a signal down this cable to tell your amp to turn on, when your stereo is off there is no signal and the amp turns off to save battery ..... When i say the stero is off i mean completely off ... even taking the front panel off will not turn it off properly and therefore it will still drain your battery (not a problem if you are driving unless your alternator is wrecked) ...... if ... when you turn the engine off in your car your cd player turns off then you are going to be just fine with this method

HOWEVER

on some car models (like mine) when you turn the engine off and take the keys out, the stereo stays on, your gonna have a bit of a problem ... this means that your stereo is gonna be telling your amp constantly to stay on, which will drain your battery in a few hours ... so in that case you need to wire in a switch which you can turn off when your not using the amp and then it will turn it off :-)

NEXT

on the headunit there should be 2 connections which are red and white phono terminals, connect the long phono cable (the one with the big red and white plugs on) into the back of the headunit and the other end on the identical connection on your amp .... simple

THEN

if you have a MONO AMP:

connect the + connection on your amp to the + (red) connection on your subwoofer box and the - connection on your amp to the - (Black) connection on your sub box

if you have a STEREO AMP:

There should be a word on your amp which says BRIDGE ... Bridging is where you effective combine the power from the Left & Right channel of the sub into one so that you can get the amps full power out of one connection .... in this case connect the BRIDGE + connection on your amp to the + (red) connection on your sub box and the BRIDGE - connection on the amp to the - (Black) connection on the sub box.

Then put your fuse back into the little black box which is on the red cable near the battery and away you go ......
